If you’ve chosen homeschooling for educating your kids, you should be aware that most parents choose another path, the one of sending them to a regular school, be it public or private, and that you’re in minority. As a minority, you need to prevent as much as you can future problems that your kids may encounter when they’d finally be ready to integrate themselves into the society, to go to a college or to university, in order to complete their studies in a field of their choice. Colleges have special requirements for homeschooled candidates to get accepted, from personal portfolios to standardized tests like SAT or ACT.
No university will take your word for granted, therefore you need to keep track of your child’s evolution throughout the whole educational process, starting with pre-school or kindergarten, going up to the 12th grade. This means that you need to take notes of how the child performed at periodic tests you give him, how he coped with regular school assignments, what activities were part of his educational program, what disciplines did he study and many more such details which could take a parent half a life to record with only pen and paper.
This is why any homeschooling parent who wishes to be productive and to make the most out of his time should be using a homeschool record keeping software. Taking into consideration the proverbial saying that time is money, the price of such a software would be much lesser than the value of the time you could save this way. Besides, there’s less room for mistakes when you have everything recorded and organized in the computer.
Such computer programs are usually highly customizable, so they can be adapted to match your specific needs. This statement is valid for programs like Edu-Track Home School, Homeschool Solutions or Homeschool Tracker. They all have many useful features such as attendance calendar, highschool transcripts or various reporting options. Some of these programs could offer you a demo version which you could install and use for free, to see how a powerful tool it can be, and only then decide to buy it or not. Other companies went even further, offering parents a basic version of their software for free. All of them provide alternatives for both Windows and Mac operating systems, so you won’t have to buy a new computer if you want to use one program or another.
